For this assignment I have been asked to tak 3 pictures in my local area along with 3 scanned images and manipulate the images with software of my choice. I have selected Adobe Photoshop because I feel that I am familiar with most of the programs features which can help to create images at a professional level.
Photoshop tools I will be using during this task.
· Layers
· Filters
· Blending modes
· Cropping
· Various image manipulation techniques of text and image
· Saving in different file formats
· Image resolution
THEME #1 – Sport & Recreation
This is the edited image of a swimming pool. I have sharpened the image by choosing the Sharpen option from the Filters menu to enhance the image edges so that details of the image are more visible. I have cut a picture of a man falling down from my scanned picture and inserted it into the photographed swimming pool by adding additional layer to the original image. I have applied different blending modes to the body of a man layer e.g. Inner Shadow in order for it to look more realistic and like it belongs to this very image. However, I also had to adjust the background more to match the body figure so I adjusted the background image by applying Hue & Saturation and made it a little bit darker. At the end I have saved the image in a JPEG file format with a resolution of 1600x1100. The bigger the resolution the nicer and more detailed the picture will eventually look.
ORIGINAL IMAGE & SCANNED IMAGE
This is the edited image of a church. My vision with this image was to make it look supernatural and at a same time mysterious. To accomplish this task I have mixed the original church image with the figure of Jesus Christ. However, before I actually manipulated with the scanned image of Jesus I had to prepare the original church image. In order to do that I started off by lowering the lightness and saturation of the image by using the Hue/Saturation option from the Adjustments menu to lower the intensity of the colours. This made the image a little darker and ready to continue to add a night time. To add night time to the image I have used a tool called Gradient Tool which allowed me to change the colours of the selected image to a darker one which created a night sky. The stars have been added by using a Brush Tool. At the end I saved the image in a JPEG format and left resolution at an original state of 640x340. I couldn’t increase the resolution of the image because it would loose its pixels and get very unclear and bad quality.
ORIGINAL IMAGE & SCANNED IMAGE
This is the edited image of a cinema. My first step with this image was to select the football player and get rid of any background that that image has. In order to do that I have selected the Eraser tool and with selected Footballer layer I have erased any unnecessary background and placed him on the street by using the Selection Tool. I have also used a Sharpen tool which is a filter option on the footballer image to enhance images visibility. At this point the image gives a sense that the person on the street is kicking something, perhaps a football. However, I had to decrease the cinemas image saturation by using Hue & Saturation option because it was definitely too colourful and it didn’t blend with the rest of the image.
FEEDBACK
- Name one strength of the images previewed
I liked Patrick’s images because they were high quality and presented in big resolution, so you can spot every little detail of the image. The final outcome of the edited images was very creative. Patrick had a vision for each picture and has been very successful.
- Name one Weakness of the images previewed
I think that Patrick could label each image with appropriate text e.g. Entertainment, Religion, Sport & Recreation. The text could also be modified by adding effects e.g. shadow, outline, texture etc. to fit the background of each image.
· Comment on the Quality of graphics
I believe that Patrick has presented very high quality graphics. He has shown his ability to manipulate graphics in extraordinary manner because the final image looks very realistic.
- Are the images suitable for purpose. (e.g used for the tourism booklet)
Yes, Patrick’s images are suitable for his chosen themes and the purpose of each manipulated image reflects upon that theme.
- What do you think of the use of Typography or Imagery used?
Patrick unfortunately hasn't put any text on his images which I think if he did, it would make it a lot better. Although, the final outcome that Patrick has presented is satisfying and reflects upon the chosen themes in a great manner.
After I received my feedback I have amended my image accordingly. I added text to the image by creating simple text and ultimately modifying it by adding effects such as: shadow and outer glow which made the text to look like its falling from the wall and made it generally look nicer. Finally I have cropped the image a little by using the Crop tool.
THEME #2 - Religion
Following the feedback, I have amended the changes to my original image. I have added a figure of Jesus which has been cut out of the scanned image and dissolved by the Brush Tool to get rid of the unwanted background. Ultimately I have changed the opacity and fill and added Blending Option: Shadow to the image.
For the text I have used the Text tool and created a simple outer-glow from the Blending Options which created a darker theme for the image. I also brightened the image a little as it was too dark and barely visible.
THEME #3 – EntertainmentI have amended any changes suggested by the feedback I received. I have added a football to the image so it is now obvious that the figure on the image is kicking an actual football. I have used the shape tool and made a circular shape to make it look like a football and added black and white stripe with a same tool but added modified texture with a Gradient tool and lined the shape with the footballer. After the football has been lined up near the player, I have added a text to the image with the Text tool. I have also added some Blending Mode effects e.g. Shadow, Inner Shadow & Outer Glow so the text looks nicer and more professional. At the end I have cropped the upper part of the image so it mainly focuses at the center of the image.
